When it comes to BGA graphics chips with a flip chip design, to reball is IDIOCY - the chip itself is dead on the inside. Heating it up causes it to work again for a temporary period of time before it eventually dies again. You can prove that the problem is not in the balls very simply by heating your chip up to 120c for ten minutes, you will see that it often works again for a short period. 120c cannot melt solder, which is proof that the issue is in the bumps of the chip, NOT the solder balls.
This is a SILLY MYTH perpetrated by people who WANT IT TO BE TRUE because believing in the myth makes their life easier, but it is a myth nonetheless.
We're seeing a lot of this now with the 2011 15.4" A1286 Unibody Macbook Pros with failing GPUs. Many people are looking for solutions to repair the problem, and reballing often comes up. Regardless of whether you use our company's services or someone else's, you need to find someone who replaces the chip. Reballing IS bullshit and your computer will die again if you go with a repair shop that reballs your old chip.
Reballing dead GPUs and charging money for it should be considered theft. It is not repair, it is just bullshit.
Even if this is a matter to debate - which side of the debate does YOUR repair shop want to lean towards?
If I'm wrong, all I did was waste $10-$49 per repair giving people new chips. So my mistake cost me $10-$49 per job when we're charging $200-$350, but my customers are getting fresh new never used GPUs installed into their laptops. Big whoop, I wasted some money.
If the reballer is wrong, you just gave a few THOUSAND people fucked up repairs that are all going to die, and will have thousands of unhappy customers coming back.
I know which side I'd rather have my business be on.
